Basic skills
Why should you get better at maths and English? Here's the kind of story young people tell:

I never learned much at school. I got to 16 and still couldn't write very well or add up very well.

I used to think it was because I was thick. Now I think I just didn't get on well with school. I never liked any of the teachers. I messed around in class all the time. A lot of days I just didn't go.
Give yourself another chance

But now two years later I'm back in a classroom. I'm learning English and maths. This is how it
happened.

I left school and got a job working in a kitchen in a hotel. I started to like it. Soon I wanted to train to be a cook.

The problem was, I needed to read and add up better. If you're a cook you've got to read all sorts of things. And you've got to be good with numbers.
Better skills for a better life

It was hard to go back to a classroom at first. But I found college wasn't like school. The tutor was great. And I had a reason to learn.

Basic skills don't just help you at work. You can look after your money better and not get into trouble with your bank.

You can read about all kinds of things on the internet. Such as football, music, fashion. You can read about places to go and things to do.
